Objective: This study has been conducted on patients with chronic hemiparesis to explore the effects that mirror therapy has on upper limb function and activity of daily living. The results should provide preliminary data for developing a rehabilitation program for stroke patients in the future.
Method: This study was conducted in July and August, 2010 on 30 patients hospitalized with hemiparesis at B rehabilitation hospital in Euijeongbu. Patients had been suffering from hemiparesis for at least 6 months. 1 group underwent conventional therapy and one group underwent mirror therapy for 4 weeks and tests were conducted for the 2 groups before and after. Tests conducted were MFT, FIM, self-care item, Bruumstrom stage(U/E, hand) and MAS.
Results: A significant difference(p<.05) was shown between the 2 groups for MFT and FIM self-care item). No significant difference(p<.05) was shown for Brunnstrom stage U/E, hand and MAS.
Conclusion: Mirror therapy was shown to be more effective in enhancing upper limb function and activity of daily living than conventional therapy. Further research should be conducted on a wider range of patients and more detailed analysis of factors affecting upper limb functions is required.
